2018 Ram 3500 Promaster 159" wheelbase.
In 2018 the opportunity to work in another state. Rather than uproot and move everything we elected to put me on the road in a 'tiny house.' The van was roughly $38,000.00. I bought the heaviest one, heaviest capacity, they made, the 3500. As with all things in life this chapter is coming to a close and it is time to let "Vanica Patrick" hit the open road with a new driver and crew.
Here is a bit about the build.
The total build took about 2.5 months to complete. It is insulated throughout with 2" on the ceiling, 1" on the walls and a 3/4" subfloor. The interior of the van was finished with tongue-and-groove cedar for the ceiling and pine for the walls. All of the sanding, painting, staining and urethaning was done by my wife (I do not have the patience for that, but I'm getting better). All cabinetry is done with 1/2" or 3/4" cabinet grade plywood. The sleeping area is roughly 75" across. I am 6'00" and do not have any trouble sleeping or standing up in the van.
The electrical is one of the finer parts of the build. We installed 300 watts (100W x3 panels) on the roof rack. These panels feed a 40A MPPT charger controller on to a 170Ah lithium battery (all components by Renogy). It has a 2000W pure sine wave inverter with two GFCI outlets. I lived in the van for over 18 months and never wanted for power, ever.
Heating and A/C. We installed a Propex H2000 heater under the passenger's seat (the seat is on a 360 degree swivel). This heater has provided comfort (68 degrees F) with the outside temperatures down in the single digits. We have a Zero Breeze Mark 2.0 portable air conditioner with a 5 h lithium battery bank. I was skeptical about a 'small' aircon unit, but I can tell you that little thing cranks the cold air. We have been super happy with its performance on the hot evenings in the mid-atlantic region.
Bathroom. 30 gal of freshwater feed a bidet sprayer in the shower area. There is a propane, on-demand, hot water heater. In the shower enclosure sits a 'Nature's Head' composting toilet.
I could go on-and-on about how COOL this thing has turned out to be, but I will sit back and answer the questions as they come through. My wife and I took our time putting this together. We were firm on where the corners could be cut and where we were going to spend the money. We put a fair bit of money into both the solar and the nature's head. She had a couple of "no compromise" points: the bathroom with a shower and a toilet. It is AMAZING!!! There is NO smell at all with that thing. I have to tell folks its a working crapper when they come round. They cannot believe it. (no need to lift the seat and go quite that far).
