Black Magic – 2016 Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 The van that actually works for people who still have jobs, kids, and commitments.
Black Magic has done it all for our family. Sports practice shuttle. Spontaneous “drop everything, the waves are firing” machine. Weekend mountain runner. Occasional “I just need to disappear for 48 hours with snacks” vehicle.
This is not a full-time van-life fantasy mobile for people who live down by the river and argue about solar panel angles on Instagram.
This van is for actual humans who still go to the grocery store, work during the week, and occasionally want to take the kids (or just themselves) somewhere better and can pack everything. This is the machine for a long weekend, or a 2 week vacation, but still able to go to Costco on Tuesday.
This is the year a lot of people quietly agree is one of the sweet spots — before Mercedes started loading the newer ones with electronics and Covid supply issued. It’s got the legendary OM642 V6 diesel — with only 156,000 miles. The van has allows been maintained at the dealer or a professional shop. I am selling this one because I bought 2022-last year for the V6 engine.
What you actually get:
- Goal Zero battery system with 120V outlets and 12V plugs, charged by the alternator so you can run the fridge the entire weekend.
- Diesel heater that keeps the cabin warm
- Fridge that shows up to the sports games, tailgating, concerts already stocked with sandwiches and cold beers (priorities)
- Awning that deploys for proper tailgating so you don’t have to pretend the sun is “part of the experience”
- Back power backseat that folds into a bed when you decide Friday night that first chair on Saturday morning is non-negotiable
- Microwave for coffee or the sacred breakfast burrito
- Actual sink so you can wash the cup instead of just… living with it
- DVD player mounted to the ceiling, connected to the Kenwood head unit and a couch for when you’ve surfed (or parented), or don’t want to sit in cold rain and just want to zone out,
- Enough room in the back that you can stuff everything in the van and not worry about packing like Tetris.
- Spray foam insulation on the walls and the ceiling.
Pull up, open the awning, put the carpet down, then stuff everything back in, roll home Sunday night, and show up to Monday like a responsible adult.
I’m only selling it because the kids are moving on and I upgraded to a 2022 with the V6 and a bathroom. The daily grind is slowing down and traveling for weeks at a time are a high priority before I get to old.
Black Magic is ready for its next chapter.
