BUILT TO EXPLORE
Our trusty friend Glinda has reached her goal and is ready for the next big adventure. We are lovingly listing her for sale.
Purchased in October 2023, this 2017 Ford Transit 250 with a high roof and 148-inch wheel base was built in a cold Kansas winter and taken full-time in June 2024 for our “adult gap year(s).”
We built this van ourselves and created the perfect layout for an elderly dog, two full-time workers, and someone who loves to cook. The added hot water heater and in-rig shower were the perfect touch for making her livable, full-time, on- or off-grid.
Battery System Info: We use a Renogy system with a 2000-watt inverter, two 400-watt solar panels, DC-to-DC charge, and two 230-amp-hour LifePO4 batteries.
Water: A 30-gallon fresh under the bed/over the wheel well, 20-gallon gray undermount with an easy-button drain from inside the van. We also have a simple water carbon filtering system, an in-rig shower, and a spot to connect a back-of-the-van “shower” with a short hose and spray nozzle–perfect for muddy paws or sandy feet.
Bed: There is a fixed bed that is a slightly smooshed full-size mattress. We are 5’7” and 5’10” and slept each night with our 40-pound fluff monster. The two windows, one at the foot and one at the head, allow for a perfect nighttime cross-breeze.
Kitchen: No lost counter space to a built-in cooking system here! Instead, we used (and are including) a portable induction cooktop. We also have a wound-up hose connected to the on-board propane to allow for easy connection outside of the rig, should you have a small grill you love to travel with! The sink is about as big as we could get, but nothing to write home about. The faucet has a touch sensor to pause the water flow, making dishes, washing your face, or general cleaning more efficient and water-conserving. There is an Everchill 3.3 cu. ft. 12-volt fridge with a small freezer built into the secondary countertop on the sliding-door side of the van. In the kitchen, we also built in a space by the window to store taller items like our cooking oils and vinegars, as well as hand towels and a few cleaning supplies.
Storage: This was one of the most critical aspects of the build for me. I needed GOOD kitchen storage and a place to safely store all my camera gear. We have six full-extension slide-out drawers—three in the kitchen and three under the bed. There is also a bench (a perfect step-up for old dogs) with nice, deep storage. Under the bed, you can fit a ton. It is not quite big enough for most bikes, but it is possible if you wiggle them correctly into place. Additionally, you could attach a bike rack to the hitch and transport them that way!
Misc:
- There is an under-seat heater tapped directly into the van’s fuel tank. (Which is excellent at low temps!!)
- We have an undermounted AC unit that can run off the batteries for a good amount of time – it kept our dog nice and cool on our longer days of exploring National Parks. Or on warm, humid nights when we were Walmart parking-lot camping, being able to basically run it all night and knowing we’d be able to quickly recharge from the sun or by driving the next morning.
- It comes with a roof-mounted Starlink that we will transfer to your name/account.
- The toilet is a Separett Tiny compact RV toilet. Urine flows directly into the gray tank, which saves the hassle of emptying the dreaded pee buckets every other day. Unlike a traditional composting toilet, there is no cranking or additives needed.
- The sliding door and back doors have VanEssential bug (or pet) nets installed.
- The front passenger seat swivels to face the living quarters.
- We removed the headliner storage we had installed (it was where we kept our sticker collection) and replaced it with an unfinished plywood version. 1) We don’t have the Jacobean stain anymore, and 2) you can add your own creative twist on this space!
