This is a fully built, full-time livable camper van based on a 2004 Ford E250 with the high-top turtle roof. Over the past few years I have personally driven this van over 35,000 miles, including a cross-country trip to Oregon and throughout the American West — Colorado, Montana, California, and beyond. I lived and worked out of it for up to 7 consecutive months at a time, running Starlink for internet. In all of those miles, this van has never had a mechanical failure or left me stranded.
THE VAN — MECHANICAL:
– 2004 Ford E250 | High-Top Turtle Roof conversion
– 5.4L Triton V8 | Automatic transmission | This engine has enough grunt to handle all of the American west mountains with no issue at all.
– 86,000 original miles
– Leather front seats (no rips or tears and wildly comfortable) | Passenger swivel seat (rotates to face rear or front)
– Factory A/C blows cold
– Fresh oil change | 4 brand new tires | New starter battery | New sparkplugs
– Brakes in good condition
– Trailer hitch | Optional large cargo carrier available
– Aftermarket back up camera and large touch screen stereo with Carplay (note this is not a high end unit but it works well) I also have the original factory unit with tape deck if you want to go vintage.
COSMETIC CONDITION — HONEST ASSESSMENT:
The van is in solid structural condition with no meaningful rust anywhere. That said, here is an honest rundown of cosmetic issues:
– The clear coat on the turtle top roof has peeled and lifted off in large sections — the underlying paint is still intact, it is a clear coat issue only. Common on virtually every van of this type and age. Could be repainted.
– There are some small cracks here and there in the original conversion van plastic interior paneling — all of it is still firmly attached, purely cosmetic.
– There are some minor dings and a few small spots where the paint has peeled slightly, visible on the top left fender area. No meaningful rust anywhere on the van. I’d rate it a 5 or 6/10 cosmetically for its age. No big dents or bangs anywhere mainly aging paint.
THE BUILD — INTERIOR:
The interior is a functional, practical build that was designed to feel like a cabin in the woods. Everything works and I have not experienced any failures with any of the systems during my time with the van.
– Cedar wood paneling on the ceiling and walls
– Solid pine cabinetry with edge-glued pine panel countertops
– Laminate flooring
– Sheep’s wool insulation throughout — hypoallergenic, mold-resistant
– Blackout window shades for privacy
– Overhead storage shelving
– Dedicated pantry area for food storage
– Clothing storage above and behind the bed in the rear
– Pull-out desk/workspace built into the cabinet top
– Running boards
SLEEPING & LIVING:
– Bed platform extends to a near full-size bed — sleeps two comfortably
– When retracted, functions as a couch/sitting area
– Swivel passenger seat rotates to face the rear, opening up the living space
KITCHEN & WATER:
– Coleman 2-burner propane stove
– Propane locker fits a standard 20 lb tank, plumbed to stove and water heater
– Bodega 58 quart dual-zone chest refrigerator/freezer
– Sink with hot (plumed off of instant propane hot water heater and cold running water)
– 14-gallon fresh water tank | 12V diaphragm pump at 1.2 GPM
– Camplux propane on-demand water heater mounted on the rear door — provides hot water to both the kitchen sink and the outdoor shower
ELECTRICAL:
– 100Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery
– 350 watts of solar panels permanently roof-mounted on VHB-bonded track sliders (removable)
– Renogy 40A MPPT solar charge controller
– Renogy 40A DC-to-DC charger — charges house battery from the alternator while driving
– EcoFlow Delta — 1,000Wh capacity, 2,000W output — runs the microwave
– Dedicated 1,000W inverter
– MaxAir roof vent fan
– Multiple 12V outlets throughout
CLIMATE:
– Factory van A/C fully functional
– Diesel heater installed — reliable in freezing temperatures
– MaxAir roof fan
– Window AC mount can be installed in rear right window, I created a mout that is painted to match van body — the unit itself I found this week is currently not working, but the mount can be re-used and a replacement unit drops right in. The dedicated 1,000W inverter is already wired to power a 500 btu unit.
OUTDOOR:
– Full deployable awning
– Awning room enclosure — attaches to awning and creates an enclosed outdoor living space connected to the van
– Outdoor hot shower plumbed to the on-demand water heater off the rear door
Everything works, the build is solid, and it is ready to go.
