2016 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 Crew, RWD, 144” wheel base, high top, turbo diesel van with camper build-out. VIN 8BTPE7CD2GE128320
Sprinters are known for being beautifully engineered with great build quality. You often see these diesel vehicles with upwards of a half million miles on them. And yet there have been known problems and when they come up it is expensive to repair. I know that first hand. I learned you need to do it right with OEM parts and Mercedes trained mechanics. I did not want to sell this van with problems so I recently put down a substantial amount to have the manifold intake runner and exhaust gas recirculation valve replaced. This van is good to go now and running beautifully. Receipts included. We never drove the van over 75mph. We’ve had everything checked out to make sure it is tip top, which gives me confidence that this van is in better shape than pretty much anything out there with similar miles.
We love camping in fair weather like the rest of the hordes but with a van you can go easily and at a moment’s notice, and be comfortable in a wider range of conditions. This van is lined with Thinsulate and the windows have insulated window coverings that are magnetized, all made to keep you warm inside. The Espar heater runs off the diesel fuel in the tank and is a reliable and safe heater, used by truckers all over the USA and in Europe where it was designed. Also, fresh air is streamed in or out of the ceiling with a MaxAir fan with remote. The van has a comfy queen bed and sliding side windows by your head for fresh air to keep you cool on warm nights.
A 4X4 is nice but with all the Sprinter ground clearance and the ease of letting a bit of air out of the tires, you can go into the outback with no problem. We lived near Zion Park for years and took this van anywhere our 4X4 buddies wanted to go.
I designed the inside to be simple and elegant. I wanted a van that could carry a lot of gear like bikes and camping gear, but I also wanted it to feel spacious and cozy. I love simple cooking, clean water, a fridge, LED lights, USB charging ports and a reliable power system with solar panels to run it all. I’m not a fan of sewage in a camper, so I didn’t install a bathroom; we used a portable toilet and a pop-up outhouse.
The van comes with an extra bolt-down seat with seat belt for an extra passenger. Also, if you need the van to haul a big load, everything, including the bed, is easily removed for special jobs. Most of the miles are highway as we used it to tour our acoustic music trio all over the West, including a stand up bass. Check out 3hattrio.
The 144” wheel base is shorter than most full-sized pickups and has a better turning radius so the van works brilliantly in the city as well as out in the sticks. Also, the diesel engine is very efficient and gets wonderful fuel economy with plenty of power. I’m 6’4” and can stand up straight inside.
