This 2018 high roof Ford Transit with the 3.5L Ecoboost engine was designed with reliability, efficiency, and long-term travel in mind. Featuring extensive storage, you can take multiple seasons-worth of gear and live off-grid for weeks without resupplying. Whether camped in a forest in pouring rain, or stealth camping on a busy city street, it has everything you need to live and work comfortably while staying completely self-contained.
The van was designed and built by a professional woodworker and former electronics engineer with a decade of experience living in and working on boats and vans.
The garage features two large full-extension sliders which will hold numerous bins of gear and five-gallon freshwater Hedpak cubes. A large, carpet-lined passenger side bay will fit a bicycle for secure inside storage. The driver-side bay provides access to the electrical system behind a plexiglass pane, as well as the plug for shore power, and a five gallon jerry can for emergencies.
The galley features a deep stainless steel sink large enough for all your pots and pans or a load of laundry. A foot pump and electric pump provide you the choice between metered water usage and higher flow for filling bottles. Quick-disconnect plumbing allows a new 5-gallon freshwater jug to be swapped out in 30 seconds. A matching 5 gallon jug holds gray water. If the van is stored in freezing conditions, the water system is easily purged. An alcohol stovetop rounds out the galley. Long favored in the sailing community for their safety and ease of use, fuel is easily found in the paint section of any hardware store. A 2.6 cubic-foot Dometic refrigerator/freezer holds enough fresh food for 1-3 weeks.
A custom LED lighting system is controlled by three sliders that control the overall intensity, the direction of lighting (downward-directed task lighting, and/or soft overhead lighting), and the color temperature–warm tungsten glow to bright daylight white). A switch engages the bonus “fireplace” mode which provides a warm, flickering campfire light, perfect for winding down at night without harsh blue light.
A bench seat across directly behind the sliding door takes advantage of the view through the sliding door’s window while providing two large drawers below. A custom-designed table may be positioned for use at the bench seat, swivel seat, door seat, or all of the above for visitors.
