We started our van ventures over a year ago because rent was getting higher and the stress of work and life was overwhelming. We’ve seen most of the US and Canada including over 20 national parks and countless state parks and campgrounds. Nature truly is healing. We learned through this that we can live amazing, more fulfilled lives with less material possessions, less stress, and more time to enjoy life. We had planned to continue on the road for awhile longer but life has handed us different plans and we have to sell the van due to personal family matters. This is where our journey ends but we hope to pass it along to someone ready to start theirs.
One of important differences between our van and many others is that we actually lived in the van full-time and can give insight into things we wished we knew before starting van life, boondocking sites, apps we used and how to navigate them, as well as answer any questions you have if you’re starting van life. Including how valuable the size of the van has been (exploring and boondocking in places where anything bigger wouldn’t fit, how it fits in a normal parking spot which is highly important in cities, length restrictions at many national parks, etc). As well as that doing our research on Ford vs Ram vs Mercedes and knowing we picked the right one (Rams are plagued with issues & Mercedes is crazy expensive to maintain and fix).
Our 2019 Ford Transit 250 mid roof 148″ wheelbase is road-tested and broken in for full or part-time van life or to be used as an income rental van (see notes below for information about the supplies we’re including worth $1000s more)
Van includes:
Ford factory installed rear cargo door windows and large sliding door window (this makes a HUGE difference for feeling bigger and lighter than without them) plus magnetic insulated window covers for all windows (windshield, driver and passenger side, slider, and 2 cargo) for temperature and light control
Oversized BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2 tires with only 2,000 miles on them (biggest size without doing any modifications to the wheel well, adds 1.5″ tires to factory size)
Brakes with only 9,000 miles on them and a 15,000 mile warranty
Dometic cfx 75 fridge/freezer (two separate compartments that can be set individually as low as 9° and either side can also be turned off to save energy and be used as a pantry)
4 lower cabinets (2 – 24″, 1 – 12″, 1 – 18″ wide, all 30″ high and 24″ deep) and 6 upper cabinets (4 – 30″ x 15); 2 x smaller shallow above bed for extra storage) all latched and hydraulic spring loaded, as well as a garage in the back with plenty of space for more, including a heavy duty pull out drawer for ease of access
Gas burner stove (huge because you don’t use energy like induction stoves AND an overall better cooking experience IMO) with vented propane locker holding an 11 lb tank, propane detector alarm, & fire extinguisher
Sink with water pump (trust me a foot pump is terriblly annoying and awful) and soap dispenser
Full size bed space
Bathroom cabinet including glass free mirror
Dometic 5 gal cassette toilet
MaxxFan with 10 settings
300 watts of solar on 80/20 roof rack

The real part aka some of the quirks and annoyances: The MaxxFan sometimes doesn’t want to do it’s job, which is a known issue with these fans. Because the energy is solar powered there can be voltage surges from the power and inconsistency of the sun that cause it to freak out and beep. From everything I’ve read it’s either the motherboard (they will replace via warranty and their own faulty manufacturing, but you have to call and file a claim and have an address to send it to, which we haven’t had) or it needs a regulator added to keep the voltage from spiking and making it beep. We’ve used it lately as just a vent and it’s been fine for us.
The backup camera: (located in the rear view mirror, see pics) works 99% of the time. Every now and again (weather maybe…?) the screen goes blue. Then magically, it’s fine. I have no clue and it wasn’t a big enough deal to take to the dealership and pay since it worked almost all of the time
Insurance: We could only go through Progressive (and I believe Roamly now caters also to full time van lifers), for insurance. Not a big deal but it makes it harder to shop around for best prices. The title is clean (no liens or salvage) but it isn’t a pro build that most insurance companies require for insuring. Maybe things have changed but that what I dealt with
$$$: I can’t offer financing but I can tell you how I did it, I got a personal loan from Lighstream (they are great for RVs/van life and I have monthly payments that are manageable vs having a big chunk of cash to pay up front
