Hello new and old Vanlifers!!
Overview:
This is our third build and the truck was custom designed and built for the active adventurer (myself and my wife, Liz) who value more usable space for gear or to do favorite yoga moves than your typical camper van can provide. It is modular so if needed you can carry a lot of gear on your adventures or go get sheets of plywood from HD. It is 'stealth' in that it doesn't look like your typical RV/camper van. It has been tested and calibrated through and through from the lower parts Baja CA to the far reaching woods of Canada. Possible toy hauler. Exceptional fuel economy. It is 'off grid' ready with exceptional electrical components. Incredible value at the price point compared to what else is out there. Registered in California as a motor home which saves on insurance, taxes, and registration fees. A true MUST SEE!!!! Only reason for selling is because we got a screaming deal on a bigger (yes we even need more space for the two of us) 2017 4x4 and the build is almost complete. She will be missed dearly when she's gone.
Build item details/highlights:
+ Elevator bed allowing functional living space when up to ceiling and a very comfortable sleeping space when down.
+ 110 VAC 9000 btu inverter mini split AC unit (has never broken down in the three years and approximately 50k miles while on the road with this installed) which can run off the battery bank. The AC system has a remote. The remote is mounted next to the bed for easy access.
+ Planar 44D diesel heater plumbed into fuel tank. This thing is made in Russia. Seems like Russians know a thing or two about the cold. I run this thing regularly at high altitude and it has never failed me. It has a electronic thermostat mounted on the wall next to the bed for easy control while in bed.
+Tons of storage
+ 630 watts of solar
+Victron 100/50 mppt solar charge controller with blue tooth and mobile app for analysis. I’ve seen as much as 45 amps coming into the bank.
+ Victron State Of Charge monitor with battery temp sensor and blue tooth and mobile app. Sends information to charge controller to optimize charging given temperature. Can analyze battery consumption metrics with BT app.
+ AM solar mounting brackets AND tilt bars. When the tilt bars are employed gain 30% in solar yield.
+ 2x Lifeline GPL-6CT AGM batteries for a combined 300 amp hours of power reserve. The batteries were bought in 2018. They are performing very very well still. I have been conducting maintenance ‘equalization’ charges 2x per year to keep them tip top. They will run the AC unit when topped off for around 6 hours if the solar panels are in full sun.
+ Automatic charging relay so you can charge the batteries while running the motor.
+ Xantrex 1800 Freedom HF Inverter
+ MaxAir fan with remote. Remote is mounted next to the bed.
+ 3x2 110v AC plugs
+ 110v breaker installed to electrical code.
+ Several USB plugs
+ Dometic fridge. The fridge works amazing barely using any electricity. Cools and freezes (yes on a recent trip to Baja we went on a fishing trip, packed this thing with fish, set it to I believe -18F to freeze it, and drove it all the way home.) The fridge also acts as a seat at the table and a step into the bed.
+ Genuine Adrian Steel cabinet in garage with lockable drawers for valuables. This cabinet is bolted to frame with stainless steel hardware.
+ Carlisle awning! Very expensive motorized awning providing critical shade for hot sunny days.
+ Top of the line electrical components; fuse boxes, terminal fuses, relays, breaker boxes, stranded wire, etc, etc, etc.
+ 12 gallons potable water
+ 6 gallons grey
+ Insulation - combination of 1” and 1/2” foam, reflectix and injectable foam.
Mechanical:
+ Runs amazing with no check engine light or other lights indicating a fault. Has been loved with regular maintenance
+ tried and true Million Mile OM647 motor. People regularly get 500k miles out of these motors, on forums there are folks who have posted well over a million miles on the original motor.
+ knowing these vehicles as well as I do I have done little things to protect it from common failure points
+ Replaced several coolant and charged air pressure hoses as they showed signs of failure.
+ new brakes @ 124k miles
+ new tires, kumho road venture @ 126k miles
+ new spare tire
+ New rear shocks, custom tuned Fox Shocks by AgileOne based in San Diego @ 95k miles. These made a huge ride improvement
+ New front struts, Bilstein, @ 112k miles
+ recent e-brake adjustment allowing it to brake properly on an incline
+ fresh oil change (although Mercedes specs oil changes every 10k miles, I’ve been doing them every 8k miles)
+ Transmission fluid change (it’s just up on my maintenance schedule, yes I drain the torque converter)
+ Rear diff oil
+ new fuel filter
+ when first bought it had some smooth running problems which were related to fuel injection equipment. After testing I replaced the high pressure fuel pump and two injectors.
+ Cooling system components (fan clutch assembly, belt tensioner, serpentine belt, idler pulleys) were changed out at 95 k miles.
+ new O2 sensor installed a while back ~ 110k miles
+ new EGR as part of the t21 recall - 110k miles
+ aluminum turbo resonator
+ I recently spotted an oil leak which was coming from the resonator o ring.. replaced with new and fixed oil leak.
+ engine and cabin air filters were changed at 112k miles
+ new 7 prong trailer harness for trailer brakes. This plug also has the regular plug type as well
Other:
+ Rear ladder to access roof. You can bring a lounge chair and a favorite drink up top to watch the sunset.
+Rear roll-up door is 4 feet wide. So is the separation door area between the 'garage' and the living area. This presents opportunity to put ATVs, Motorcycles, etc in the back and then unload
+ she really drives smaller than she looks.. can fit in most parking spots, even at the grocery store
+ titled as a Motor Home. This saves you tax and registration fees and also allows you to insure the build.
+ Pass through from cab to back.. there’s NO pass through. My lady and I weighed the pros and cons of a pass through and at the end of the day we wanted the space where a pass through would be located to store things; have a diesel fired heater, and a REAL SIZED garbage can, plus room to drop fully packed grocery bags, dog food, and more! We could not be happier with this decision.
+ Motor home is being used until sold so mileage will be going up slightly.
