2021 Freightliner Sprinter 170″ WB 2WD Custom Off-Grid Camper Conversion

Built from an empty cargo shell up, this van was designed and built to actually live in, not just camp in for a weekend.

We started with a completely blank Sprinter chassis: no floor, no walls, no systems, and custom-designed every inch of this build ourselves. The goal was a van that felt like a real home on wheels: comfortable enough for full-time living, capable enough for boondocking off-grid, and finished with details you won’t find in a production camper van. We put that to the test living in it full-time for four months during a home renovation, and it’s taken us from Seattle to Glacier National Park and Zion, plus several trips around the Olympic Peninsula, Oregon, and the rest of the PNW.

The Layout

1. HappiJac mechanical bed lift, the standout feature of this build. Raise the bed to open up the entire rear into a lounge/table hangout area with wraparound bench seating, or drop it down to sleep two up top. Combine that with the lower bench seating converting into a second bed, and you can comfortably sleep two couples (or a family) at once.
2. Swivel front passenger seat with a dedicated fold-out tabletop, turning the cab into a proper work-from-anywhere desk or second dining spot.
3. Full kitchen with a stainless sink, gas cooktop, and compressor refrigerator, finished with a hexagon marble mosaic backsplash and butcher block counters.
4. Interior and exterior shower systems, so you can rinse off after a hike or surf session without tracking sand through the van, or shower indoors when the weather (or campsite) calls for privacy.
5. Garage storage under the benches, accessible from both inside and outside the van, great for gear, tools, and outdoor essentials without having to climb in.

This is a van built for real off-grid time: enough battery and solar to run without hookups for days, and enough water and climate control to stay comfortable doing it.
