My partner and I just finished 9 months on the road with this rig (which was amazing!), but it is time to let her go.
When I was searching for the perfect option that suited our needs, I spent a lot of time browsing vanlifetrader and other websites. I knew I wanted the smallest rig possible that had these specific features: a full inside bathroom/shower with hot water, a large garage space for bikes/gear, a full inside kitchen, an electrical system & water storage that could keep us off-grid for a while, a roof tall enough so I could stand up (I am 6'5"), and all of this at a somewhat affordable price. There are plenty of custom vans that have all those features except the last two: there weren't any vans I could stand up in and most of them were very expensive. This led me to more "RV" options.
Our rig, a 2021 Coachmen Crosstrek 20XG, is technically a B+ class RV. It sits on Ford Transit 350HD chassis, but has a larger "house" area than most custom vans. It checks all the boxes that I wanted, plus some additional features that turned out to be really handy (full hookups for campsites, house AC, 32" TV) for a price than was LESS THAN HALF of most custom vans I found. This rig turned out to be everything we wanted for our trip.
Some additional features/items we will keep in the rig if you'd like:
- Bike rack built into the floor of the garage
- Auxiliary solar panel (150W)
- Carhartt seat back storage
- Hanging fruit net
- Custom cut insulated window covers for the cab area
- USB charged blender, fan, and air purifier
- Leveling blocks
- All the hoses and electrical needs for full hookup campsites
A couple of notes:
- We just had the rig winterized, never driven in snow or on salted roads
- It has side view and backup cameras, but the backup camera doesn't work (there is likely a kink or pinch in the line running to the camera). It was working for majority of our trip, and when it stopped working, we got along fine without it.
