My Story:
This van has been an absolute joy to own and it’s definitely going to be emotional to see it go. It’s been sitting in my driveway for the majority of the past eight months being used every other week for the odd trip and sadly I just can’t justify holding on to it given some other life goals and priorities I have.
I purchased this van brand new from Ram as a custom online order and had it delivered directly from the Ram factory to Colorado where it was immediately converted by Dave & Matt Vans. This was the 53rd Promaster conversation they did and by now they have now done ~300 conversions and have solidified themselves as the go-to Promaster van conversion company. The team at Dave & Matt Vans is amazing and when I hopefully get another van in a few years I expect to buy from them again. You can learn more about Dave & Matt Vans here: https://dmvans.com/
My goal for the build-out was to maximize storage and functional space – with a focus on mountain biking and working from the van. It took five years of watching as many van conversation videos as I could to finally make the jump into van life so I became pretty opinionated on what I wanted and the builds Dave & Matt Vans and the advantages of a Promaster lined up perfectly.
Electrical system (I went overkill here on purpose):
- Charging via two Renolgy 160-watt monocrystalline solar panels (320 watts total) as well as alternator charging when driving and a Renogy Voyager Solar Charge Controller
- Renogy 12 Volt 170Ah Lithium-Iron Phosphate Battery (no stress about monitoring battery levels)
- Renogy 3000 Watt 12V Pure Sine Wave inverter for AC Power with 3 outlets (I wanted to be able to have an espresso machine in the van and this pulled 1750 watts so I upgraded to the 3000-watt inverter. I also routinely used my Vitamix that pulled 1500 watts)
Kitchen/Living area:
- Clean, simple, and instant cooking on an induction cooktop
- Isoterm Elegance AC/DC 130L (4.6 cu.ft.) refrigerator with freezer compartment
- A simple, two-tank fresh and grey water system with electric water pump (7 gallons freshwater, 7 gallons graywater, BPA-free plastic tanks, additional tanks could be purchased and swapped in)
- Two MaxxAir MaxxFan Deluxe fans and two sliding side windows for ventilation, front fan is manual, rear fan is on a remote
- Two swivel seats
- Comfortable sleeping for two on a memory foam mattress
- I work remotely for a software company so I would often work from the van and had a “standing desk” setup where I hung a monitor from some ceiling hooks above the bed. The “top of mattress” bed height was the perfect “standing desk height” for me but if you are shorter you could have a pull-out laptop/keyboard platform that slides out from under the mattress
- Insulated with 2”+ of spray foam insulation (R value 6-12) with stained beetle-kill pine wood paneling
- Waterproof laminate following with metal edge protectors
Storage/Garage:
- Storage above the kitchenette, six kitchen cabinets, above the front seat storage
- Slide-out garage tray that can fit three bikes (2 mountain bikes, 1 dirt jumper or road bike) with the front wheels removed (front wheels can be placed between the bikes). The bike tray can be easily removed to open up the entire garage area for storage if desired.
- To the side of the bike tray I had Room for 2 large and 6 small HDX Storage Box Totes (the common Black & Yellow ones you see at Home Depot)
Other Van Upgrades:
- Cruise Control, Rostra 250-9642 Cruise Control for Ram Promaster 2014-2021
- TAC Grill (Brush) Guard, Custom Fit 2014-2022 Dodge Ram Promaster
Measurements:
- Interior height of this van (floor to ceiling): 74” (I am 6’1″ and can stand in the van with my shoes on)
- Top of the mattress to ceiling: 28” (enough to sit up and read or do computer work from bed)
- Bed Dimensions: 68” by 55” (you sleep “wheel to wheel”, I slept slightly at an angle as my height of 73” is longer than the bed’s length of 68”)
- Garage Height (floor to base ob bed platform): 35”
- Countertop Measurement: 54” x 21”
Maintenance & Gas Mileage:
- The van currently has 48,531 miles (I am driving this van ~10 miles per week)
- Ram’s 5-year or 60,000-mile Powertrain Warranty is transferable to the new owner
- I have all the service records and have been meticulous with maintaining this vehicle. All work has been done by professionals (dealer for maintenance and JiffyLube for oil changes).
- I have the full carfax that I can provide to interested buyers
- I replaced the stock tires with all-terrain tires (Falken Wildpeak A/T3W) at 34,367 miles. This impacted the gas mileage by about 1 mpg but the looks and confidence to get do some trailheads and camping spots were worth it.
- I average 17 mpg but I can get up to 20 mpg if I keep it below 65 mpg on the highway and drive efficiently. I recently did a trip from Bellingham, WA to Pemberton, BC and back and drove as efficiently as possible and averaged 20.6 mpg over 312 miles of driving.
Future Possible Upgrades:
- The van is insulated with 2”+ of spray foam insulation (R value 6-12). There is not a heater in the van. There were some nights when this would have been nice to have but never to the point where the cost would justify it. If you want to install a heater, I recommend installing a Webasto Gasoline Air Heater kit that sits perfectly under the passenger seat and taps directly into the van’s gas tank. The cost of this is roughly $1600 plus installation.
