As for the van and engine of the van, it was looked over by Zeke’s Autowerks in Hendersonville, NC, before the person who converted it went to Utah. Zeke did a full transmission service and RSN fix (a common T1N annoyance), swapped the transmission pan, changed the oil, checked the computer for possible stored codes, put in a new fuel filter, and changed the viscous fan clutch on the radiator fan. The radiator and the auxiliary AC fan were changed in summer 2021. The T1N engine is absolutely the dream to drive, and I consistently get around 25mpg driving this van on the highway. This is a 140 wb so it is easy to maneuver in town and no problem parking. Rust is often a common problem with these vans, but this one is in great shape. The paint is in fantastic condition, as the previous owner put on a fresh coat shortly before it was converted.
Now for a bit of detail on a few aspects of the build.
First: the bed is a full sized queen bed. It slides to only take up half of a queen bed footprint when not in use, serving as a loft space. The bed uses an extremely sturdy slat system which is also easy to pull out. This design maximizes space in the back since the front cab is totally cut off. I loved this, because I felt more safe overnight in the back. The mattress is covered in custom slip covers and is itself encased in its own bamboo cover; it is a 4inch memory foam that is surprisingly comfortable.
Second: the doors. If you’ve been looking at Sprinters for a while, you will know how rare it is to find dual sliding doors. The couple that converted the van picked a layout to highlight this feature. Not only does it allow for excellent airflow in the van with the doors open, but it helps to maximize space in the back of the van. The booth seating at the table can sit 2 adults comfortably for a meal or card game at the table.
Both the kitchen countertop and the table were custom made by woodworker Emmett Kornfeld (@engineered_by_emmett), and they are beautiful pieces of woodwork. The counter is butcher block using the edge grain of solid walnut, and features a custom made end grain walnut cutting board that can be placed in the sink for extra counter space. It has been treated with mineral oil and beeswax, to ensure the finish is robust and food safe. The table is also made from solid walnut and was treated for over a month to stand up to even the reddest wine spills.
Third: the stove. This was a bit of an eclectic find, from an antique shop in Asheville, NC. The beautiful 2-tone paint is in near flawless condition, and the enamel on the inside shows almost no signs of use. Even the thermocouple to control the oven temperature works. It’s perfect for heating up a pizza or cooking eggs on the road!
Paulie was professionally redecorated by interior designer Tammy Gerber (@house_on_hansen) last winter. I am willing to discuss including design elements as you’d like.
