2004 Dodge Mercedes Sprinter T1N
High roof version with 158” wheelbase
138,000 miles
This was a passenger van that we have been converting to an RV. We have had some personal life changes that haven’t allowed us to finish the conversion. We aren’t able to use the Sprinter very much so we are selling it to give someone else a chance to put their own finishing touches on it. It is functional now to use for camping but finishing it off will allow for the full scope of usage and features. It has been a great vehicle for us.
The Sprinter runs really well. It is such a nice size for anything from day trips to extended trips. Other than getting new tires at some point this summer (as mentioned below), I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this Sprinter anywhere. The T1N platform is known for its reliability and longevity. This is a very low mileage Sprinter and it has a lot of miles left to be used.
We designed the vehicle to be used for our family of four. We kept the second row seat so the Sprinter can easily transport 4 people fully with seat belts.
In the back, there is a bunk bed. I weigh 240 pounds and have slept on the top bunk with no issues at all. The frame is built using aluminum converted from a loading ramp. This creates more space but also a very strong foundation. The bunk bed can also be easily removed for times when the bunk bed isn’t needed.
Under the bottom bed in the back is a storage area. Included will be heavy duty slides so that a platform can be pulled out from the storage area to make loading up the storage area easier.
The design of the conversion includes a floor to ceiling closet area for storage. There is a pull out Porta Potti. There is a kitchen area that will include a countertop with a sink to use water from portable jugs stored in the cabinet under the sink. The design also was planned to include an overhead cabinet that runs above the kitchen area and above the 2nd row seat on the driver’s side to give additional storage.
The electrical runs off either shore power or the 200amp batteries. The electrical is mostly done except for connecting some of the overhead lights and finishing up some of the cable management.
Features:
200Ah of BattleBorn Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries (2 batteries at 100 Ah each)
Victory MultiPlus Compact Inverter/Charger – 2000W 12v
Victron battery monitor with Bluetooth
Sterling Battery to Battery Charger – 60 amp (this has been connected to the vehicle but electrical installation to actually charge the batteries has not been completed)
TruckFridge 12v/115v Refridgerator (TF130 AC/DC model) – We love this fridge so much. Lots of room and so convenient to be able to use 12v or 115v as the power.
Havelock wool insulation throughout the vehicle (Rigid foam board also used in some areas like floor and in any windows that needed to be covered)
MaxxAir Roof Fan
The Turbo was replaced last year and runs great.
The oil was changed last fall and is done regularly.
New Alpine stereo with 4 new speakers.
Rear top mounted A/C that keeps the vehicle very cool when driving (this is the original AC that runs off of the engine)
Front dashboard panel A/C also runs great.
Brand new hitch. We use it for a heavy duty bike rack but the hitch is class 3 so it would be useful for a trailer as well.
A/C was fixed up last summer with new parts. I believe it was a new condenser that was installed.
*There will be several parts included with the sale to help finish the conversion:
Extra alternator
Brand New Sink
Water pump
LED lighting
Heavy duty pull out slides
Haynes Owners Workshop Manual
Extra exterior venting options
Extra Rear Door Hinge
Known issues:
One of the glowplugs seized during change in them out last year (all of the others are new). Our mechanic, who used to work for Dodge on new Sprinters being built, recommended leaving the one old glow plug. He told us that it shouldn’t cause any issues unless you are needing to start the Sprinter in very cold weather. I live in Minnesota and haven’t had any issues starting it when it is above 0 (I have never actually tried when below zero). The one glow plug being old does throw a trouble code so the check engine light does stay on.
The exterior also has some rust spots that can be seen in the pictures. My plan was to fix the rust spots and then use truck bed Liner on the bottom 3rd of the sprinter. I won’t get to this since we are selling. The underside of the sprinter is fairly clean. There is some rust but the rust is worst on the sides of the vehicle in the circle sized spots.
The tires have good tread but I can see small cracks starting to form on the side walls in a couple spots. If I was keeping the Sprinter, my plan would have been to buy new tires this summer.
The door locking is a little quirky. Mercedes built in a central locking feature, if all the doors can’t be locked, then it unlocks them all. This Sprinter suffers from a fairly common problem where one of the doors contacts must not connect properly so it throws a signal that it didn’t lock. The solution is fairly simple: Push Lock (hear the lock then unlock), Push lock a 2nd time (hear the lock, then unlock, then lock).
