This van has practically zero rust on the underbody, and the bodywork is in very good condition considering its age. The only notable cosmetic issues are flaking paint on the rear bumper, revealing the black plastic underneath, and a small dent in the back hatch from backing into a juniper tree.
Maintenance wise, I have always kept up with filters and fluids. I have also done a lot of “future proofing” maintenance to ensure reliability on the road. Since I have owned the van I have replaced the timing belt/tensioner, thermostat, radiator hoses, lower ball joints, clutch master and release cylinders, front wheel bearings, front drive flanges and front and rear shocks. I also reconditioned the ECU with new capacitors and had both driveshafts professionally rebuilt. The front brake pads and rotors are brand new. I have used OEM parts whenever I can.
The van is geared for a top speed of around 60-65 mph, while you can go faster it’s not very comfortable. The motor can get warm at times, especially when climbing mountain passes, so it’s crucial to monitor temperatures and slow down as needed. Aftermarket coolant temp and exhaust gas temp gauges were installed to keep a closer eye on engine temps.
With Full Time 4WD this van is just small enough to get to more remote areas on public land while being just big enough to carry everything you need to stay out there for a while. Many times I have spent 10-12 days dry camping without resupplying.
There’s a lot more to know about the van and the camper conversion. So, if you have any questions let me know and I can provide more details.
